Reflection # 9
Discuss the role of emotional language in your L1 and L2. Which language is emotionally richer?
Personally, it depends on my environment and surroundings. My mother only speaks Spanish therefore I talk to her and argue with her in Spanish. When I talk to my husband I don’t even think in Spanish.
I love to read to my kids in Spanish and tell them how much I care for them in Spanish. Now, my mother in law (anglo, only speaks English) has learned to say besitos to my little ones.
As your learners acquire (participate?) in their new speech communities do you see a change in their emotional language behavior.
In class I always encourage the students to speak English. Sometimes Spanish students discuss with me their family troubles or need guidance. Then it is Ok to express themselves in their L1. When speaking in their L1 they feel more comfortable and free to discuss their needs. Also when they want to tell me a joke they always want to share it in Spanish.
