Reading Prompt 4

Communication and collaboration are the main elements in the language process. Students learn from interacting with each other and when they are comfortable among other students they use the opportunity to practice their conversational skills. Students are able to express ideas and sometimes they might agree and disagree and discussions will arise, creating opportunities for more language use. Moreover, the use of authentic language among native and non-native speakers is essential because the native speaker is modeling and the non native is learning to use language appropriately.
I like all the ideas that Egbert suggests in his book, from giving specific task roles to students on research to creating activities using on line resources. The reading circle is a great learning tool, such as the one we use here in our classroom. During reading circles students make the most of their reading and writing. Currently I have not used technology in the classroom just PowerPoint presentations. However, I soon will be creating a reading circle on a blog and a wikipedia in my class students will enter new vocabulary like a word wall on computer. More information to come.

Hi, Rosa. I was thinking about how wonderful reading circles can be, and I love the idea we saw where the author, Sue Monk Kidd, got involved with the class reading blog. That would be so gratifying for the students who love reading, and I would hope that between the interaction and the technology, the reading blog would be added value, added motivation for the students who don't normally get so into reading. Let me know how it goes!

Aren't you teaching adults? Do they have these resources at your school? I hope so--that's great that you and some of our other classmates are implementing these ideas right away, so we can get useful feedback on how they worked while we are all still in this class.

I do agree with both of you... reading circles and technology will motivate and engage Ss while they are practicing their English skills. Students will collaborate to their learning while using their language communication, they will learn from their peers by sharing ideas, reading, writing, etc.
The word wall on the computer is a great idea Rosa!! Trying to incorporate more technology into our classroom is going to be fun and helpful for our students!

I love you idea about creating a reading circle on the blog as well as a word wall on the computer. What grades do you teach? I too would love to start a blog for my Spanish classes. I teach at the high school level. I probably will start on one this Summer to begin using it with my classes next scool year. This way the students get on a routine, and I can teach them a little better out a blog. Please let me know how it goes with your word wall on the computer. How are you planning to set it up? I'd like to try that sometime too. -Rosario

Hi Rosa,

I am curious to know what grade you teach because your idea of the vocabulary word wall on the computer is great! Could you let me know how you incorporate this into your classroom? Because like you, I have only currently used Powerpoint presentations. I would love to incorporate additional technology in my class. I only have about two semi-working computers for the students to work on. I would love to hear more of your ideas.
