Reading Prompt # 8

CUMMINS Ch. 3. Assessment EGBERT Ch. 8.
AssessmentTraditional standardized testing involves written tests and the grading system is already set. On the other hand, authentic assessment refers to as close as possible task to real life situation. For example, to evaluate students writing, the instructor can ask the students to write an essay on a certain experience lived by the student. In evaluating, students' ability to use specific verbs or nouns, students would be tested by requiring them to perform a series of role play using the proper language, rather than by asking students to answer written questions about grammar. Evaluating student’s portfolio with writing samples is an example of authentic assessment. This portfolio can be kept computerized. The use of web quest and on line reflection from readings is also a good way how computers can assist in these kinds of assessments.
Moreover, standardized testing does not use a rubric format and students are not aware how they will be graded. Authentic assessment usually has a rubric grading system where students are aware what to expect and teachers have an opportunity to provide feedback.

I like your idea of using a e-portafolio and put their writing samples on it. Students can scan their papers and keep track of their progress. Also parents can have a total access to it and more if is in a CD. If parents have no access to a computer at home, they can print out their writing. This will be a good authentic assessment. This will be easy for the teacher to keep track of their writing progress.

Rosa,

I am glad to see that you mentioned Webquests as a tool to use for assessments. The students love to use online activities and what an awesome method to integrating technology.
