EGBERT Ch. 6. Inquiry and Problem SolvingRICHARDSON Ch. 8. Podcasting and Screencasting: Multimedia Publishing for the Masses
One activity that I did with my classroom was I had a nutritionist come to class and discuss the food pyramid and how to make healthy choices. I implemented this program to encourage and support the use of new vocabulary and at the same time teach the students about nutrition and to think about healthy living and to make the right choices for themselves and their families health. That program took a couple of classes but when we finished we went to the supermarket but before we went the students had to make a list of proper foods to eat along with a budget for the week.
When we went to HEB the students had to count calories and find nutritious products. They had to do a lot of planning and use their vocabulary skills. The students practiced a lot of problem solving by planning their budgets and analyzing the proper nutritional factors and counting calories. The new vocabulary and nutrition skills they acquired will help them in make healthier choices at the supermarket and learning how to budget their food shopping will also help them when budgeting for other expenses.
Podcasting
A podcast of nutritional information, useful vocabulary and budget tips that students could take with them to the supermarket would help reinforce the skills the students need to make the healthier and more cost effective choice. Every time we go the supermarket we are faced with dozens of choices some products healthier than others and always we need to make a derision on products that fit our budgets. However, we often slip either by spending needlessly or by purchasing products we really should not be eating. A podcast to take with you to the store would reinforce good nutritional values and give the student advice on spending within their budget. The podcast would also reinforce new vocabulary and help them practice what they learned.
