Reading Prompt # 7

EGBERT Ch. 7. Content-Based Instruction
When designing content instruction instructors must keep in mind to include cultural relevant literature and supplement instruction with proper materials for the students.
Egbert suggests supplementing content based language instruction with the use of audiotapes, live demonstration such as videos from national geographic, outlining texts, graphic depiction for example, visuals, words wall, and acronyms to recall meaning.

Currently, NWVC has implemented their first reading blog. This reading class is combining reading content with the use of a blog as supplement for language. Kerry Smith, former UTSA graduate student and Dr. Wright’s student has created the reading blog. It has been a team work, kind of train the trainer. I come to class; I learn, next day I put into practice ideas into the classroom and with other teachers.
In addition, I am teaching a basic ESL class on March 18th after spring break I will also create a blog for that class. I will create it with useful ESL links along with weekly basic topics for their response. By participating in the blog topics students will practice what vocabulary they have learned in class. Also depending on the topic students by actually writing their own and reading other students submission will become more familiar with the lesson topics, vocabulary and blogging.
Also, I was thinking of setting up an audio CD library in the classroom. These way students can listen to audio books and then answer questions based on the book or write or use their oral skills to describe or repeat what they heard. This is particularly helpful when the audio CDs are relevant to a topic we are discussing in class.

Rosa,

This is fantastic. Using what you learn in class the next day with your own students in your program -- Music to my ears! So glad Kerrie is learning through you as well.

Be sure to post the links when you've got things up. Can't wait to see them!

Keep up the great work!
