Reflection #2

Reflection #2
Offer some thoughts about what you see as a relationship between behavioral, nativist, and functional approaches to studying first language acquisition and your own experiences in learning or teaching a second language. In a second response, discuss the role of culture in first language aquisition. Many of you speak more than one language and English is your second language. Do you think the child-parent interaction is different in the United States' English speaking population and a non-English speaking population that you are familiar with?

Behavioral Approach– it consist of imitation, practices, repetition and reinforcement.
Nativist Approach - refers to every person is born with the ability and capacity to learn language. It becomes innately, naturally and instinctively. Moreover, is meaningful and interactive within asocial context.
Functional Approach mentions expression of cognitive and ability to deal with the world and ourenvironment.
The relationships these methods have are the way aperson learns languages. Researchers are curious onwhat will the best method in learning language is.Everybody wants to figure out which approach worksbest. As far as my teaching goes, I am an adult ESL educator I teach beginning and intermediate English. The first day of class I discuss study skills and tips on how tolearn English. I briefly touch on some approaches sothey can be aware how they learn the best. However, because of the age group and the needs of the studentsI use lots of the functional approach. In fact, myclass is never quite. I utilize music; we role play,we read aloud. Look for more examples further in theblog. Myself as a learner, I was born in a Spanish home andlearned English from school. Therefore, I see myself also as a functional learner. On the topic of culture and parents, I believe both parents in the household have to work therefore itleaves very little time to read and play with kids. This is the reason Einstein’s Cds and learning toys are so popular for those who can afford it. In othercultures, one parent stays home until the child isschool age therefore they spend more time talking and playing with their offspring. By playing and taking to them the child is exposed to more vocabulary. In my case, my grandmother played a big part of my growingup. She’s the one who will tell me fables and stories in Spanish.
