What is your learning style? Have you ever taken a learning style inventory? In your classrooms as teachers how have you or do you address the issue of learning styles? Finally discuss your experience with learners' beliefs about language, of either your students or their parents. How has it affected your teaching?
My learning style is a combination of visual and kinesthetic, I do not have good passive listening skills. I can only capture the first 7 minutes of a lecture. I keep that in mind when I teach, so I have mini-lessons followed by an activity. I took a MyersBriggs test once. The results were pretty accurate. It said that I was ESFJ (Extravert, Sensing, Feeling and Perceiving). I am married to a lawyer, which is the opposite of me. He analyses every questions and answer. In the meantime and I am more touchy and make decisions based on the situation at hand. In the classroom I explain to the students what are learning styles and strategies they can use to learn the new language. I explain why is important to know their own learning style and why I use certain learning strategies. For example, I recommend using index cards, listening to music, or having a conversational partner. I think is important for them to recognize their own learning styles. I also implement listening (audio) reading and writing(visuals) and technology such as wikipedia, blogs and power point. I also explain to them how to work in groups and the importance of speaking in class and working together vs. working in isolation. Some students are not use to working with these strategies. They have been taught to be passive learners and always agree with the teacher.
