Prompt #5

As I was reading chapter 5 in Egbert’s book, I was thinking how exciting it would be to be in Mr. Lins’class.I think to be able to create advertisements using the computer and filming their ads would certainly keep students attention and active.Throughout reading the rest of the chapter I was getting energized thinking of how I can utilize all the different activities suggested by Egbert. Egbert’s offers many concepts on using creativity and production in the classroom. Creating a web quest is one of them that I have been introduced to in Dr. Wright’s class.I teach adults and in my basic class we learn how to write thank you notes. We practice them first by writing them and then we type them on the computer. We do not have internet which limits us somewhat so therefore I have to be creative and think of more hands on self generated activities in order to use the technology available to us. We also created holiday cards, students had to make one as an invitation for a class Christmas party. They were allowed to bring guests, no holiday card no guest. I also integrated a newsletter into our activities. I started the framework then invited the students to contribute stories, recipes, family or neighborhood news.

Rosa, I agree with you Mr. Lin made the students get focused on the subject at hand and keep them active. This activity is good to keep them energized, it's like in your class you have limited access to the internet so in your case you do a work around which is hands on activites which limits your usage of technology but you still can incorporate some of the concepts and ideas Egbert had in chapter 5. Teachers like you is what every school needs someone who is willing to go beyond even when we find ourselves limited to certain tools.

Rosa,

Bummer you don't have access to the internet with your ESL class. But sounds like you're still doing great stuff with technology. Before I had internet access in my classroom, I would just download stuff from home and then put on the computer locally in the classroom. Doesn't NW Vista have wireless yet?

Dr. Wright,

Yes, NWVC has computers, and a big beautiful lab. I have only been in NWVC for one month. I was talking about SAISD Adult Ed. program for 3 years we did not have computer. Now, I was able to get a business co. to donate one but no internet access.:( But students are able to use word and other programs. When I started with SAISD I didn't even have a blackboard for a year! Is funny how creative we can get when we lack supplies.
